Fun for the whole family is kicked off by the Forest Fair Parade on Saturday, July 7 at 11:00 am. The planning began in 2000 by a small group of dedicated folks who felt a need for an intertribal get-together. In addition to the native Athabascan, Eskimo and other indigenous tribes of our region, Alaska is home to a wide variety of transplants from other tribes originating from throughout the United Sates and Canada. An intertribal powwow was needed to keep all traditions alive and to recharge our spirits. Permission to hold this powwow was requested from the Traditional Chief of the Athabascan people of Interior Alaska. Chief Peter John of Minto gave his blessing to the group and the Midnight Sun Intertribal Powwow was born. Our first powwow was held in 2001. ******************** WORLD ESKIMO~INDIAN OLYMPICS Date: July 18 -- 21, 2007 Where: Special only for 2007 to be held in Anchorage, Alaska at The Sullivan Arena Time: 6:00 PM, although there are activities throughout the day starting about 10:00 AM with the various atheletes and contests Cost: Children 4+ Under FREE Youth 5-15 $ 8.00 (with Parent supervision) / Adults 16-60 $10.00 / Seniors 61+ $ 8.00 ** Adult Season Pass $35.00 ($5.00 savings) / Youth Season Pass: $27.00 ($5.00 savings) For more info: www.weio.org P.O. The event was a big success and has been held annually ever since. For time immemorial, Native peoples of the circumpolar areas of the world have gathered in small villages to participate in games of strength, endurance, balance, and agility. Along with these athletic games, dancing, story telling, and other audience participation games took place. This provided an opportunity for friendly competition, entertainment and laughter. The hosts provided food and lodging, and visitors brought news from surrounding villages and expanded opportunities for challenge building and renewing old and new friendships. This is the background of the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics and the atmosphere, which we seek to replicate. In 1973, the Board of Directors of Tundra Times passed a resolution changing the name of the World Eskimo Olympics to World Eskimo-Indian Olympics to more accurately reflect the ethnicity of the participants. The logo for the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics is six interwoven rings representing the six major tribes in Alaska - Aleut, Athabascan, Inupiaq, Yup’ik, Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimpsian. Some of the events are One-foot High Kick, Blanket Toss, Knuckle Hop, and many more. My favorite is White MEN vs Native WOMEN Tug-o-War--Kick Butt Girls--If You've never seen the games be sure to get out for at least one night--nothing else like it for pure clean fun. ******************** DAWSON CITY MUSIC FESTIVAL Date: Fri.-Sun., July 20 -- 22, 2007 Where: Dawson City, Yukon Territory Cost: Weekend Pass: $90 (GST included) Day Passes: $15 per day (GST included) Palace Grand Evening Concert Tickets: $20 per evening (GST included). Helped make the stage for what was the second festival this crazy little village has, and got in for free, Salmon dinner included. What a place!!! Lynus O'Brien The Dawson City Music Festival, christened "Canada's tiny, perfect festival" by Vancouver's Georgia Straight, has been successfully run by volunteers since its inception in 1979. Although it takes a little longer to get here, many are drawn by the festival's vibrant atmosphere and sheer uniqueness. Every year the best names in Canadian music perform for an appreciative and spirited audience. Over the years some of the country's brightest up-and-coming acts have shared stages with more established musicians in what is truly one of the most anticipated cultural events in the Yukon. Artists such as the Painting Daisies, the Mighty Popo, Veda Hille, and the Constantines have played alongside the likes of Jane Sibbery, Bruce Cockburn, the Rheostatics and the Barenaked Ladies. The festival is held each year on the 2nd to last weekend in July, right at the height of the community's visitor season. Tickets sell out months in advance to an audience made up mostly of Yukoners, but many come from the U.S., and as far away as Europe and Australia. Daytime events include concerts and workshops at intimate venues throughout the community, as well as a full slate of children's and family entertainment, games, and crafts. When night comes, the tent becomes the biggest dance party north of 60, while the historic Palace Grand Theatre plays host to beautiful sit-down concerts. No matter if you’re into rock, folk, jazz, blues, world beat, or traditional music, the festival has something for everyone. ******************** ANDERSON BLUEGRASS COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL Dates: Fri.-Sun., July 27 -29, 2007 Where: Anderson, Alaska at the Anderson Riverside Park--near Clear Air Force Station off the Parks Hwy mile 283. This year’s lineup can be seen (here). In the past there have been such bands as Jake Matson, the best bluesman to ever grace the Last Frontier, Gangly Moose, Coho, James Prewit, Arment Hammer, Rumblefish, Nervis Rex, Bucket O’ Bolts, Mosaic, Rising Dogs, Andy Baker, Mo Betta Blues, Johnny with Spoonerism, Killer Rabbit – and more. One of the many new improvements to TB&MF is a Designated Family Camping Area! Our intentions are to create a separate 'family friendly' camping environment, enabling families with children and the more conservative festival goer the chance to have a positive and enjoyable festival experience. With a designated area for Families, we would request that patrons who utilize this special camping area, to not set up obtrusive or excessive camps. There will be no unnecessary 'louder than camp' noise after 10:00 p.m., (Radios, Conversations, Music, etc). If this doesn't sound like your idea of camping, then we request that you utilize our Open Festival Camping area. We hope this will give everyone the opportunity to experience the TB&MF." Talkeetna Bluegrass & Music Festival is happy to see the return of some of the bands that we missed in the past few years. Welcome Back! There will be security checkpoints, Entry fee includes camping. With vendor booths selling arts & crafts, food and drink. ******************** TANANA VALLEY STATE FAIR Date: Aug. 4--12 Where: Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, Fairbanks Time: Gates open at Noon Cost: Daily $8 - Adult, $5 Senior, $5 Youth, Children Free - 5 and younger / Seasonal $30 Adult-ages 18-59, $20 Youth-ages 6-17, $20 Senior-60 and older, Children Free - 5 and younger For more info: Tanana Valley Fair (907) 452 - 3750 This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This is the Interior's big affair, and this year is Special, it being the 75th Annual Valley Fair--Hence the theme "Diamonds are Fair-ever." Yeah, I know it's another corny little catch-phrase--but isn't that what the local County, Borough, or Valley Fairs have always been. It's a remnant from times gone, when life was simple, and we weren't so worldly. So I admit, it maybe doesn't have the same appeal as a weekend in Cabo, but so what, there are exhibits, food, entertainment, outrageous locally grown Alaskan Veggies on display, livestock and more. Check out the website at the link above and make plans to get there at least one day, if not more. And talk about progressive there will be a major recycling project going on, so be a good American and consume lots of pop and things wrapped in foil, deposit in the specially marked barrels as the proceeds will be going towards The Lyons Youth Midget Hockey League, so it's all good--and after all that is one of the turn-ons about these gigs, guilt-free sampling of the treats that come around but once a year. Enjoy and see you on the Midway. ******************* ALASKA STATE FAIR Date: Aug. 24--Sept. 4 Where: State Fairgrounds, Palmer Time: Mon.-Fri., noon to 10 p.m.; Sat., Sun. and Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Cost: $8 adults, $5 seniors and kids 12 and under; 5 and under, free.
